week 32 in pictures

this is an odd week for pictures… most of the pictures are from sunday. I don’t have any idea why I didn’t take any pictures on monday, tuesday, wednesday or thursday, but I guess it’s okay because I have a ton from sunday…

so, we have sunday: while waiting for the blue angels to fly, layla and micah started watching some people sitting near us who were passing the time playing backgammon. they wound up sitting on their cooler while they watched, having the game explained to them, and getting to roll the dice for the ladies who were playing. they were very sweet to let my kids pester them with all their questions and include them in their game.006

everyone else was doing this:010

it was somewhere around 95* out, and then we moved from the park out onto the I-90 bridge (it was closed for the show) where it was even hotter on the asphalt. but we figured this was a better place to see the show.012

the view of the blue angels WAS pretty darn good.2012-08-135

after we finally got out of there when it was over, sat in traffic to get home, we were SO hot and sweaty. first we filled up about 100 water balloons and threw them at each other, then we sprayed each other with the hose, and then we turned on the slip & slide. it felt awesome.043044045

ginger wanted to get in on the action too. it was actually pretty funny to throw water balloons for her. she couldn’t figure out what kept happening to them. but I took this picture while she was waiting for me to throw a ball for her… LOVE it. I love it so much I blew it up to 8x10 and now I can’t decide if I want to put it in the book or frame it and hang it on the wall…054

friday: layla and micah finished up a week of vbs at the church where micah goes to preschool. after it was all over, I tried (in vain) to get a picture of them… this was the best I got. neither wanted to have the picture taken. LOL.013

saturday: shane was bored and asked me if he could wash all the windows. I was not going to say no to that! so he spent a good share of the afternoon up on the roof washing windows and skylights and giving his mother a heart attack.

homemaking 101... ponderings, ramblings... the usual.

so i've been analyzing lately (because that's what i do) why i get so frustrated with myself, my shortcomings in the areas of housekeeping and organization, creativity, cooking, etc. it would seem that i'm trying to live up to the expectations of june cleaver, or my grandmother, or something equally unrealistic. no, i don't expect to push the vacuum and baste a turkey in heels and pearls, (besides, i have the roomba , remember?), but i do expect more of myself than i have been giving currently. why? i've been doing what i usually do when i have an issue i want to know more about; i check out every book the library has on the subject (organization problems anyone?). there are a LOT of books out there written by homemakers, for homemakers with a lot of different slants on the whole subject. interestingly enough, the view that disturbs me the most is not the one that suggests that God has decreed it so that women have no other calling than to be wives and mothers (alt

hello again

my mom actually complained the other day about my lack of posts lately. REALLY. i told her that i’d had nothing to write about. at any rate, here’s my update for now, in relation to recent things. we did decide to trick or treat. it was fun. shane’s mario costume actually came together pretty well, thanks to a little help from my friends. layla’s flower costume also happened, barely, also with a little help from my friends. (are you detecting a theme here?) micah’s monkey costume was borrowed from a friend. (for some reason, i have a beatles song wandering through my head right now, do you?) here they are:   as i’m writing this, it’s reminding me of just how blessed i am to be a part of this community, family, neighborhood, etc. let me expound that part about a little help from my friends: we’ll start with shane. he got the idea to dress up as mario after his friend, sean, mentioned that he was going to be luigi. so i chatted w/ trudy about what she’d gathered so far. she mentioned a g

Snow day memories

Some day, I'll get around to finishing the story of our epic 3 week long road trip from 6 months ago... But today, we have snow. And no school. And neighborhood kids building igloos in the front yard. And hot chocolate. And sleds and shovels and a rack in front of the fireplace that's literally dripping with hats and gloves and snow pants. I like the snow, in case you can't tell. Actually, I love the snow. Like L O V E the snow. It used to be, that when snow was predicted, I would glue myself to the tv, watching all 3 or 4 channels of local news, morning and evening. (This is significant because I am not a news-watcher. I actually hate the news.) Now that the way we watch tv has turned into something completely different, and we don't even subscribe to any channels, I'm glued to my weather app (or apps, actually), watching, days in advance to see if that snowflake still stays on that day. What % chance is it? How much accumulation? Is there an advisory? A warning? I

how to make a bad situation worse:

around 7:30 on thursday evening, we had a situation like this: not a good scenario. about 2 hours later, we were in this situation: awesome, right? so how do we get from point A to point B? like this: see the awesome metal ‘edge of death’ on that bowl? yeah. that’s the weapon. in my effort to speedily get the bowl under layla’s face, I actually HIT her in the face with it, and the edge SLICED her upper lip open. yup. right open. it was NOT awesome. I freaked out, of course. she’s still in the middle of feeling terrible. dave was not home yet from a meeting. yeah. mom is majorly freaking out. fortunately, dave walked in the door just as I was sending the “GET HOME NOW!” text. it wasn’t really bleeding a ton, but it was obvious that this was not a band-aid situation. so I called my dad to come and stay with the boys while we took her in to the ER. it’s very nice to have an older kid, so we didn’t have to wait for him to get there before we could leave. but not knowing how long it

project life 2014–week 11

sunday: stayed home from church with 2 coughing/sneezing kids. got to play a rousing game of headbanz with a cat cemented to me instead. monday: I took this out my parents’ kitchen window. I was doing some cleaning there and my dad went outside to do some yardwork. suddenly it started DUMPIMG hail. typical of my dad, he kept right on working, whilst hiding under the trees. tuesday: getting started on layla’s science fair project. this is her grand plan. two pots of lettuce seeds. one will be watered with water, the other with sprite. we’ll see if there’s a difference. wednesday: driving between the upper and lower totem lake malls… both sides of the street are lined with thunderclouds and they are in bloom right now! so pretty! I used to drive this route home from work every day about 7 years ago, and always try to make an excuse to go back around this time of year because it’s so awesome. also wednesday: hello spring! which of course meant: thursday: we had some time between dr
