PROJECT LIFE!!!!!!

I know I’m one of those people that, when I get excited about something, I get REALLY excited. it is one of those things that dave and I like to tease each other about. he’s so even-keeled, that it drives me nuts when he’s not jumping up and down about stuff he’s supposedly excited about… and he thinks it’s odd that I have reactions of ecstasy over things like… really good strawberries, for instance, or when the daffodils push their little green heads up out of the ground (which they are doing right now, btw. **you can’t see it, but this is me jumping up and down**)

at any rate, I’m SUPER excited about something right now: project life! mary turned me on to this, and I was totally skeptical at first. I didn’t get it. she started this last year, and kept raving and raving about how wonderful it was and all that… so, of course, I was intrigued. I started following becky higgins’ blog, and I started to get excited about the prospect of doing this myself.

SO, what is it? well, it’s a photo album. it’s a scrapbook. it’s a year of your life.

I’ve always been a hardcore, traditionalist scrapbooker. I was even a creative memories consultant for like 2 years (before I accepted the fact that I SUCK at selling stuff and called it quits). I have hundreds of dollars of scrapbooking supplies that I never use. why? because I have young children. I’m busy. I have a small house with no place to spread all my junk out and be creative and LEAVE it there for the next time I feel like working on it. my kids like stickers and scissors and fancy paper, and all that, and would like nothing more than to destroy it! and so it sits. along with the thousands of pictures I have in a box, not to mention, the 6 years’ worth of digital ones I have on my computer. and the guilt meter is ringing up a very high number on this mom.

so here’s the deal with project life. there’s none of that. nothing to cut, nothing to stick, nothing to ‘create’. no sharp tools to cut off your children’s fingers, no stickers to find stuck on the doors or floor, no 14 million different designs of paper and die-cuts to coordinate. everything is there. everything you need, except your pictures and your words about them, to document a year of your family’s life. it allows you to focus on the every day, as well as the big events. the holidays, the birthdays, the vacations, the field trips. but it also encourages the date night, the first day of school, the funny outfit, the spilled milk, the encounter with the neighbor’s dog, and yes, even the little green heads of the daffodils poking up out of the ground…

so no, this is not solving my years’ worth of pictures and memories waiting to be dealt with, but is putting a stop to the build up of new guilt. AND, it’s so fun! I totally love it. WAY more than I thought I would. so THANK YOU, MARY! thank you for being so brilliant!

So here’s the story behind how I got mine. I had decided I wanted to do this, right at the beginning of january… a good time to start, right? so I was browsing this year’s product line, but they were all sold out, for the time being. mary mentioned that she just happened to have a spare of last year’s design, that she was looking to get rid of because she had received on of the new ones for christmas. so I thought about it, and figured I was impatient enough to go for it! after all, it was my first one, so it didn’t really matter if it was last year’s or not. and so she stuck it in the mail to me.

and I waited.

and waited.

and I got more excited and more impatient.

I was already busy selecting my photos and making plans.

I thought it might come on friday.

it didn’t.

and then on saturday, the mail man had a box for me!!!!!

001

of course, I tore it open right away! beautiful!004

and I spent the afternoon getting it all put together. layla was super excited to help me. shane and I had even picked up my pictures at costco that morning.

I got this awesome feeling, as I was flipping the pages, putting in cards and monthly bookmarks, knowing that this was a physical representation of the year to come. blank. empty. I could see where birthdays would fall, holidays, vacations and such, but it was all there, just waiting for OUR LIFE to HAPPEN. whoa.

I’m a very visual person, so seeing that really kinda hit me as very awesome, indeed.

at any rate, I’ve been having loads of fun taking pictures, and choosing what will be our photo of the day. making sure I have my camera ready, and overcoming my feelings of stupidity and self-consciousness as I take pictures of the dog walking down the street… this is life. as it is RIGHT NOW, and I think it’s worth remembering.020

  1. I am so glad that you love it. It has definitely been fun for us. The other cool thing is that you can have the kids do cards or drawing too. All three of mine love to contribute with a picture or a little story. I love seeing Lily's writing in it too. :) I am hoping that my kids will continue writing every year so that we have a sampling of how their writing has changed over time.
PS. It is nice to have that as filler for the days that I/we forget to take a picture. I just use the 4x6 unlined index cards.

first day of school

so, we started school today. this is a big deal because it is OUR first day of official homeschooling. you know, here. at home. most everyone reading this is already aware of the fact that shane has been homeschooled since first grade, but that he has spent the majority of that ‘school’ time, with my mother as his ‘teacher’. this was a fine arrangement, she was willing and more than qualified, and he was learning. but for a variety of reasons, not the least of which being my mother’s current cancer issues, it had become clear that it was time for me to take over. AND,with layla being 4 now, i really wanted to do a little bit more preschool stuff with her. being a little bit of a chicken flake, i (with much urging from my loving husband) decided the best route to go would be with a packaged curriculum. i figured it would be the most time-effective way to cover what we needed to cover, and be somewhat dummy-proof, but at the same time, having the option to supplement with as much

i have "done something"

about shane's room. if you notice over there on my BIG FAT TO DO LIST, for ages now, i've had "do something about shane's room" on the list. and it has sat there on the list, doing nothing.  well yesterday, we "did something". i couldn't put "clean shane's room".  that wouldn't really cover it.  i wasn't sure exactly how to phrase what is was that needed to be done in there, mainly because i don't really know the proper grammatical term for "set off 4 sticks of dynamite followed by much jackhammering and industrial vacuuming".  needless to say, it was a pit! every saturday, one of his chores is to clean his room.  but at this point, that was just putting clothes in the basket, books on the shelf, toys in bins, etc.  anything else was WAY too big of an undertaking for a 9 year old boy on his way out the door. sadly, i didn't think to take a 'before' picture, so i didn't bother with an '

for my not-so-american friends

i didn't have an actual roll w/ the green plaid on it, but i found a refill and an empty roll in my junk drawer (yeah, i know, that should tell me something).  but even the empty one says 'scotch' on it.  there you go!  SCOTCH TAPE!

Micah’s Birthday

This kid had the audacity to turn 13 yesterday… As was expected, I was a bit of a hot mess about the whole affair. Here’s his “last day to be 12” photo. He ran out of fingers a couple years ago, so taking a page out of Shane’s book, he borrowed a couple of feet from the cat to make 12. But, not too old to choose Lucky Charms for his birthday breakfast. He got his happy birthday facetime call first thing and got to open his gift from Gramma and Skip while they watched… He’s had a boom box on his list this year. You might remember that 2 years ago, it was a Walkman. The obsession with 80s audio continues. Gramma found this one and it seems to fit the bill. Looks totally retro, plays and records tapes but also has radio AND a USB port so he could use some modern tech with it, as well. So, he spent the morning taking advantage of the birthday allowances of not having to do his weekend chores and lifted time limits on video games… all while listening to the radio or one

project life–week 18

the three amigos… this trio of the neighbors’ poultry is always in my parents’ yard. and spark way too many “why did the chicken cross the road” jokes. these are the two lilacs I gave my mom for mother’s day two years ago. last year, only one bloomed. looks like this year, both will have some nice flowers! when I get to the bottom of a bag of chips and they’re too small to effectively scoop up salsa, I just dump them in a bowl, pour salsa over them, and eat the whole delicious mess with a spoon. not ashamed. dave got himself a new set of bike tools. everyone had to check it out. first grade music concert. micah had a solo! saturday baseball fun. pitching, homerun derby, bouncy houses, dunk the coach… and of course, eating kettle corn and horsing around.
