what I wore wednesday

so… here we go again! another week, another series of outfits that attempt to look cute, coordinate, and not be jammies or sweats. it’s starting to act like fall around here. chilly in the morning, foggy, warming up to the low 70’s by afternoon. except yesterday. I think we topped out at 65 and it was FREEZING! at any rate, that means I’m starting to reach for more layers, long sleeves, and my skirts and capris are being replaced by a boring, 9 month long onslaught of long pants… but the good news about all of that is that I dug out my uggs for the first time today! woohoo! I have warm, toasty, comfy feet right now… the bad news is that you can pretty much plug those into any picture I take of my outfits from here until next may. it’s a win-lose situation. I think I’ve covered every day except saturday. I did get dressed… and I had a picture, but it was horrible, and after looking at it, I can’t believe I went out in public with my hair looking like that! at any rate, I am going to do my best to forget that saturday happened.

wednesday:

016

yes, I’m headless. I hadn’t done my makeup yet, so I figured I’d just NOT take a picture of my head. LOL!

  • tunic sweater: old navy, thrifted
  • tank: j crew, thrifted
  • capris: levis, via handmedown, via personal alteration
  • necklace: target
  • shoes?

pretty sure I wore shoes that day, just can’t remember which ones. I’m sure they were black, sandal types.

thursday:

 034

  • top: american eagle, thrifted
  • cami: thrifted
  • jeans: handmedown
  • jewelry: walmart and ???

and I even painted my toenails to match!050

friday:

065

it felt so much like fall on friday that I dug out my corduroy pants!

  • top: express, thrifted
  • cords: old navy, thrifted
  • necklace: 1928

sunday:

      080

I’ve been waiting for it to get to be ‘fall-ish’ enough to pull out this dress. I LOVE THIS DRESS. love it. the deep eggplant color, the bell-shaped sleeves, the pleated satin sash… LOVE! and we were even in a picturesque location when I was wearing it, too! of course, I posed for all of like .5 seconds before I had to start directing my kids to stop running away, leave the ducks alone, not to fall in the water, etc… I’m so demanding. my husband had the camera and was apparently having fun with the whole situation… 081 083

I’m pretty sure that last picture can be captioned, “have you taken any pictures yet?” he just laughed. the rundown:

  • dress: express
  • cami: target
  • shoes: born
  • footless tights: pretty sure these are left over from my dancing and/or skating days so… probably danskin or baryshnikov. dance tights are THE best. I have a hard time wearing any ‘normal’ tights. they always fall down or roll over at the waist, giving you a spare tire you didn’t really have to begin with… NOT flattering! there, that’s your fashion tip of the day. stop buying your tights at target. go into a dance shop and stock up. you’ll thank me.
  • jewelry: my famous pearls that I love.

monday:

 089

you can go ahead and disregard the “okay, go ahead and take the stupid picture so we can get out of here” look. this is what happens when I have my almost 5 year old take my pictures… first of all, I was in a little bit of a panic that he was going to drop the camera on the driveway, and secondly, I just wanted to leave. note the arm load of ‘mom junk’ I’ve got going on… other than my water bottle, I’m not even sure what I’m carrying, but I know it was getting awkward to hang onto.

tuesday:

090

first of all, I’m totally ticked about this picture. this was my favorite outfit all week (well, maybe second favorite), and it’s the worst picture. I never had a chance, and this was taken, by my amateurest photographer (again) at sunset. so I look all yellow and the flash went off because it’s too dark and blah blah blah… at any rate…

  • jacket: h&m, thrifted
  • top: handmedown
  • jeans: gap, thrifted
  • earrings: target
  • keys and plastic bag: just a bonus! ;)

so there you have it… linking up 2 places again this week! you should totally join me. at least check some of these out. good inspiration!

meal plan monday

lent starts this week, so we’ll be having dinner at church before the services every wednesday night! I love it because I don’t have to cook, and it’s fun to see friends over dinner as well… of course I have to negotiate bites w/ layla (who generally doesn’t like soup, which is generally what they serve), and I get to put a bowl of soup in front of micah so he can look at it, refuse to eat it, and eventually eat it myself… oh well, such is life. monday: soup and grilled cheese sandwiches; fruit cocktail tuesday: chicken and rice casserole (we never had it last week); peaches wednesday: soup supper at church thursday: tater tot casserole friday: pizza; green beans saturday: hamburgers; oven fries; carrot sticks sunday: waffles ; bacon DOH! just realized I forgot to buy the buttermilk for the waffles. oh well, I’m sure there’s something else I’ve forgotten as well.

my #1 use for old broken crayons

hi, my name is rachel, and I’m a mom. if you’re a mom, chances are, you’ve encountered this: broken crayons.  it’s a fact of life and it’s annoying. well, sort of. there are actually dozens of uses for old broken crayons. today’s post will highlight just one of them. you may have done this one before: these are muffin crayons. you take an old muffin tin (I picked one up at a thrift store years ago and use it for this, paint, sorting other small crafty type things, etc. while good in theory, and popular among preschool teachers, I really find this lacking. here’s why. kids don’t like to color with muffin shaped crayons. first of all, younger kids, unless shown, have no idea what to do with them and will ignore them. if you tell them they’re crayons, they’ll try to hold the thing flat against the paper and rub back and forth. this is okay, for the experience, but once they’ve done that a few times, they put it back and are done with it. how do I know this? I have a set of muffin ...

bacon-potato chowder recipe

dave found this recipe at some point when we were living in ohio. he apparently had a hankering for some chowder of some kind. so I have no idea where the credit goes in this case. but we’ve been making it ever since, so it was definitely a winner! 1 lb. bacon cut in small pieces 1 cup chopped onions 4 cups diced potatoes 2 cups water 1 tsp salt (and some pepper) 2 cans cream of something soup (chicken or celery) 2 cups sour cream 3 cups milk **edited to add: apparently, dave says he adds a clove or two of garlic as well. chop them up with them up and add them with the onions.** in a big pot, cook bacon over medium heat. add onion and cook until tender. drain off grease. add water, potatoes, salt and pepper. cook 15 minutes. stir in soup, sour cream, and milk. cook until heated through. easy, but best to do all you’re chopping, dicing, and measuring ahead of time. if you like it thick, simmer a little longer… don’t make this if you are dairy intolerant or on a diet! lol. a...

growing!

just a little update: so I posted at the end of january about my “ 33 pound waif ” and her new tiny person accommodating car seat. well, I picked her up one day last week and thought she felt REALLY heavy. so I thought I’d put her on the scale, just for curiosity’s sake… 38.2 pounds. yes, that’s right, she’s gained 5 pounds in less than 2 months. crazy! dave, of course, suggested that in not very long, we’d be able to SELL the carseat while it’s still in really good shape and get some good money for it. I gave him a dirty look.
