the saga of micah and the never-ending mystery fever…. installment 1

my little guy has been plagued since wednesday, with this crazy fever that just keeps going up and down. my first clue should have been the 5am wake up on wednesday morning, and what sounded like some slight sniffles.

layla had an appointment that morning to have her hearing tested, and i had arranged for micah to hang w/ my friend lindsey. he seemed kind of quiet and sleepy when i dropped him off, but i assumed that was due to a combination of being a little sleepy from getting up so early, and being in a strange place.

when i came back to get him, just over  an hour later, he was passed out on the floor of the livingroom, in a pile of toy trains. interesting.

we took layla to preschool and then came home, at which time, micah asked to watch phineas and ferb. so i turned it on and he lay, comatose, for the next half hour on the pooh couch. it was at this point that it occurred to me to take his temperature (duh!) and at 102.6, i gave up on my slow-poke thermometer and just went for the tylenol (and my IM window to apologize to lindsey!).

when he went to bed that night it was at 103.0, and reached that again later yesterday afternoon. that’s when i called the dr. to see if the thought they should see him. they said no. not until saturday, or it goes up to 105, do they need to see him.

UGH! this is so frustrating because he doesn’t seem to have any other obvious symptoms, which kind of makes me afraid he might have an ear infection or strep throat or something. he doesn’t complain about anything specific, but just kind of squirms and moans when the fever is up.

when it’s down, of course (via the tylenol rally), he’s playing baseball, playdough, jumping on the trampoline, asking for ice cream, etc…

i was so excited this morning when he woke up and seemed cool. i took his temperature and it was normal, even though he was very whiney. he eventually perked up, and his fever seemed to be gone! finally!

and then about an hour ago, i noticed he looked like this:001

and we’re back at 102.6. GRRRRRR!!!!!!!!!!!!!

tomorrow AM, he’s either better or at the dr. the momma bear thing is kicking in in a BIG way.

well THAT doesn’t happen every day…

thank goodness. I was doing a little browsing on my computer. I had to get up to go chase micah down and make him get dressed. I returned, approximately 2 minutes later, and found this: yes, that’s a slug. and a pile of marginally defined goo of dirt, grass, and slug slime. on my dining room floor. where my chair had been only moments before. and my feet. eeeww. I have no idea how it got there. I assume it has something to do with the dog. or the kids. btw, simple green is excellent for removing slug slime from hard floors. in case you ever find yourself in such a predicament.

project life–week 21

the spread:   included this week is the letter that layla brought home from school about a BEAR that was spotted in the vicinity of the school grounds. in case you forgot, we do live in the boondocks! thank you, nature, for joining us! first half of the week: second half of the week: thursday’s slot if filled with the thank you card layla received from locks of love for her hair donation back in november. extras: the back of this page has the letter from the school. I also decided to do 2 5x7 collages this week instead of an 8x10. mainly because I only had a handful of extra pictures, but I had a bunch from our saturday brunch w/ uncle eric. so I did one that is just from that. I like it. works for me (and requires less extra pages in the book. I’m already a little concerned about reaching capacity before the year is half over!) and that’s week 21!

easter stuff

okay, so this isn’t ACTUAL easter stuff, but the accessory easter stuff that i want to talk about. good old-fashioned, secular, commercialized easter stuff. NO, i’m not about to embark on a rant, so you can keep reading… i suppose there’s just as much variation among families w/ christmas stuff of this sort, but i’m always curious about people’s traditions, especially because they seem so different. some people i know are full-on ‘easter bunny believers’. they treat the easter bunny much like santa claus, w/ the filling of baskets and hiding of eggs and all that being attributed solely to the easter bunny. their kids are convinced that the easter bunny is real and responsible for all of that stuff. there are people who have their kids pictures taken every year w/ a shopping mall easter bunny. there are people who do only candy in easter baskets. there are families who hide the easter baskets. there are families who do HUGE easter baskets full of lots of presents. some people don’t do e...

what’s in my closet? installment #9 – accessories

okay, this is something I’m not very good at. I’m trying to get better. I’ve always had a minimalist approach to dressing. if it doesn’t serve a purpose, why put it on? well, I’m slowly coming to terms with the idea that accessories may serve a purpose, even if they don’t cover a limb. first picture – ‘formal’ bags: tiny black bag (???): I think this bag is fun, but you really have to be traveling light. it’s covered in big black sequins. pink silk bag (farmer’s market): I LOVE this bag. get comments on it every time I carry it. it’s made out of kimono fabric, and lined with green. it’s big enough for a couple things, but not many. red clutch (target): I got this to use with the black dress featured yesterday. it’s tiny, so again, light packing. layla is obsessed with this bag. even if I never use it again, I’ll save it for her to use. second picture – ghosts of purses past: blue hobo bag (old navy): I really love this purse. I love the rainbow stitching, I love the big dumpy s...

week 32 in pictures

very layla-heavy this week. camera magnet. sunday:     do not believe that crap about boys and girls being no different. I used to believe it. I did everything I could to provide gender neutral toys and experiences. and then I experienced reality. shane and micah play with cars in this way: they line then up. they race them. they crash them. they make outrageous wrecking noises and ‘vroom vroom’ noises. they build stuff like car washes and repair shops and off-road vehicle parks out of blocks for the cars to use… layla plays with cars in this way. (and may I add that this is all after the cars have had baby cars and taken their naps under the blanket… monday:     layla is super happy to have mastered the hula hoop! tuesday:     this magic little piece of plastic was in layla’s stocking last christmas. it’s a card holder and is SO awesome for little kids who want to play card games, but can’t manage a whole handful of cards. wednesday: ...
