“you should have your head examined!”

… i just did!

yup, yesterday i had the thrilling experience of sitting in a hospital waiting room for 2 hours, followed by another in a trauma room.  no, i don’t think i had suffered any sort of major trauma – i think that’s just what room they had left to stick me in.  i mused about where we would go if they had to kick us out because a ‘real’ trauma situation arose.  thankfully, we didn’t have to learn the answer to that.  i guess i was a traumatic as it got during that window of time.

backing up, i wound up in the hospital yesterday because micah threw some clothes on the ground.  the night before i had been folding laundry in the living room.  i had a couple of stacks of ‘hang up’ clothes that were draped over the baby gate in front of the fireplace.                         Picture 113yes, it’s a christmas picture, but i knew i had it in my stash.  at any rate, there’s the ugly baby gate that the clothes were hanging on.  also notice the wood mantle above it that the nativity set is on.  you can’t tell in the picture, but it’s actually quite pointy.  as in, it’s widest at the top and then tapers in toward the bricks of the hearth.

at any rate, micah knocked the clothes off the gate (of course, pushing them over the  back so they were on the floor by the fireplace and down with all the nasty sooty fireplace tools.  so i went to retrieve them.  i stood by the gate and bent over to pick them up but somehow managed to smack my forehead on the edge of the mantle on the way down.

yes, i realize that sounds incredibly stupid.  you wouldn’t think that one could actually injure oneself in that manner, but apparently, one can… at least i can.

when i hit it, i totally could hear my teeth rattling around in my head, and i stumbled backwards. i felt like someone had punched me in the stomach and i was afraid i might throw up.  sweet little layla wanted to kiss my owie for me, but i was having none of it.

my dad showed up a few minutes later because he was going to watch the kids for me while i went to do some cleaning at their house, but i told him i was afraid to drive for a little while yet.  i still felt very dizzy and nauseous.  it was totally like i was in a fog and VERY slow.  i couldn’t type very well or complete a sentence without a lot of UUUHHH’s and UUUMMMM’s. then the roof of my mouth and the front of my face started tingling, and later, my hands.

he called my mom to tell her that i wasn’t going to come just yet and he was going to stay with me.  she, of course, freaked out and told me to call the doctor.  i did, and they told me to go to the ER.  GREAT!!!! just what i wanted to do.  thanks mom!

so anyway, by the time i was actually seen by the doctor, i was feeling a lot more normal, but they made me go through a neurological test (similar to a drunk driving test) with a lot of pointing to my nose and flipping my hands over back and forth and walking in a straight line.  that was fun.  he said i could have a CT scan just to be on the safe side, but he was comfortable with me not having one, so i opted not to. (oh, and i DID pass the neurological test, in case you were worried.)

i do have to say that i stayed up VERY late last night, even though i was feeling fine.  i watched a lot of ‘what not to wear’ and cleaned the kitchen and dining room floors on my hands and knees with a rag.  i think i finally managed to go to sleep around 2am, and since i’m sitting here typing, i guess i woke up… that is, unless heaven looks very much like my house, has a computer, and dirty dishes.  no, it couldn’t be.  there’s still ugly green carpet in the livingroom and i can’t imagine God would put up with that.  then again, there’s coffee, so i suppose it could be… you never know!

playgroup aftermath

we had playgroup here today. lots of fun, lots of MOMS, lots of kids, lots of mess! micah got up this morning before 6 and powered right on through until everyone left at 3. and then at…   we had this: sleepy guy. we had to go pick up shane from the y, so i put him in the car and he napped until we were almost back home. a perfect little nap!

a tribute to layla

i love my daughter. i really do. if i had only 3 words with which to describe her, it would be “full of life”. and she really, really is. she is someone who wants to experience all that life has to offer. i love the age she is too. her excitement about things is always contagious and her ideas hilarious and creative. she’s one of those kids who can’t just paint the paper, and whatever the rules for the game happen to be, they’re too boring and she’s going to play it her own way, darnit!                      there are a few things that come with this fabulous age, however, that i could easily do without. the screaming fit she had today, for example, over a graham cracker. she had the intention of giving it to micah, and broke it in half, even though, the whole time she was doing it, i was telling her NOT to give one to micah because he was having his lunch. i...

another sign

i'm going to have to take more pictures soon, i'm running out. christmas movies! yes, one of them is a bob the builder movie, but the kids deserve to get in on the festivities too, right?  we also have the polar express , but i'm not sure where that was when i was taking the pictures. and a charlie brown christmas , but that's on vhs and our vcr broke, so it will have to be replaced.  i want to just keep building our collection each year.  there are so many fabulous movies! and speaking of, i promised living-under-a-rock-kate a list of the absolute MUST SEE christmas movies... obviously, the ones in the picture (well, you can watch the bob the builder one if you REALLY want to, but i don't really consider that a MUST SEE!). in addition: it's a wonderful life, miracle on 34th street (the real old one, not the new one with the annoying girl), a christmas story, frosty the snowman, santa claus is coming to town, the year without a santa claus, christmas with the...

THAT’S NOT FOOD!

my friend, stephanie , has inspired me with her most recent post. apparently this was a topic on oprah today, i don’t watch her show, but it’s a good topic. my comment on her post (which is great – read it. the post, not my comment.), was quickly turning into a post of it’s own, so i decided to continue my vent here. it probably won’t be as eloquent as hers, but i’m climbing up on the soapbox she just got off of. we eat CRAP! LOTS and LOTS of CRAP!!! as a nation, it astounds me how much non-food we consume. i’ve wondered about this for a long time, but it used to be inspired from an environmental standpoint rather than a nutritional standpoint. i wondered about all the garbage we throw out. it bothered me that you couldn’t go to the store and buy granola bars without also buying a box and 6 wrappers, that would then be thrown away. i wondered why, every time you buy salad dressing or ketchup, you have to buy a new bottle, which would then be thrown away. i wondered why, every tim...

i love bees!

so, i took pictures for this post yesterday and then, upon checking some other favorite blogs, i discovered this on angie’s blog. she totally beat me to it! oh well, i guess it’s a common thing right now. but not to be outdone, here is my post: the bees are just crazy right now. especially on the raspberries, which makes me super duper happy because it means we’ll have a TON of wonderful raspberries this year! as you can see, we have a LOT of them… my patch keeps on growing! and the whole thing is literally alive with bees. you can watch it and it’s constantly moving and buzzing… just a whir of activity! it’s really something to see!    i just love bumblebees! i always say i want them for pets. maybe it’s because they’re so fuzzy! i could watch them for hours.    my rhodies are finally blooming! i love that purple one.
