another taken from the betty crocker cookbook, but i mess with this one so refer to the disclaimer … 1 tbsp olive oil 1 clove of garlic, pressed (or some good shakes of garlic powder) 1 lb. stew beef 3 cups of hot water (I probably use closer to 3.5 or 4) 1/2 tsp salt 1/8 tsp pepper 3 medium carrots, cut in thick coins 2 stalks celery, cut into 1/2 inch pieces 1-2 medium potatoes, cut into 1 inch pieces 1 small onion, chopped 1/4 tsp salt 1 bay leaf *optional: 1/2 bell pepper of your choice; 1 turnip; 1/2 tsp browning sauce (whatever that is) 1/2 cup cold water 2 tbsp all-purpose flour heat oil in large pot. cook beef and garlic in oil about 15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until beef is brown. add hot water, 1/2 tsp salt and the pepper. heat to boiling; reduce heat to low. cover and simmer 2 to 2 1/2 hours or until beef is almost tender. stir in remaining ingredients except cold water and flour. cover and simmer
{still sorta here. still sorta blogging}
and my husband has just pointed out that all this discussion of 'sellotape' helped make something from harry potter make a lot more sense. in book 2, ron breaks his wand and fixes it with 'spellotape'. he said the harry potter wiki defines it as the wizarding equivalent of sellotape. haha. i said i was glad some nerd had devoted his life to clearing up the confusion of the international masses! lol.
ReplyDeleteFor goodness sake, I could have cleared that one up for you. I happen to be almost fluent in British venacular.
ReplyDeletewell maybe you should start a website.
ReplyDeleteI actually knew what scotch tape was but thanks for clearing the confusion up!
ReplyDeleteI have to say that we grew up calling it cellotape. Must be because India was colonized by Britain.
ReplyDeleteso i guess i was aiming that at pei. didn't she say she'd never heard of it before?
ReplyDeleteNo, no, no. Confusion reigns all around, a testament to how hard it is to communicate without inflection! As I posted on Kate's site, I am very familiar with scotch tape because my kids go through it by the 12-pack-full (and keep Costco in business) I was merely noting that I hadn't really heard people use "scotch tape" in the generic. I think I'm hanging around too many preschoolers who say sticky tape. I'll go find some big kids and listen to their language... hmm, not a good idea, there's probably going to be a lot of cussing going on... :-) Thank you, though, for your concern with my americanization ;-)
ReplyDeleteokay, sorry! it seriously sounded like you guys had never heard of scotch tape. i hope no one thought i was being condescending.
