cyclocross!

today, 3/5 of my family participated in their first cyclocross race! dave, shane and layla all raced.

dave’s race was at 9:15, so we hauled our butts out of bed at a crazy hour and headed over to south seattle.

here’s dave getting ready to warm up in the rain.007010011

riders have to dismount and run up hills or over obstacles – carrying their bikes with them, then remount and ride on.013009012

just crossed the finish line. the race was 30 minutes long – 4 laps. dave placed 58 out of 63. not bad for a first race AND, more importantly, not last!016

the muddier you get, the better.017

next up, was shane’s race. for whatever reason, it took FOREVER for them to start this race. it was at least 15 minutes late starting… layla and micah entertained themselves by running around in the mud.

there he goes – red shirt.020021022023

shane had no trouble with the obstacles, even lugging his *heavy* non-road bike over… the kid on left, however…024034

all done, and nice and muddy too. he came in 13 out of 35 and was pretty jazzed about that. can’t remember how long the race was. maybe 20 minutes? it was 2 laps. I missed the end of the race because, since it started so late, it overlapped with layla’s race. I love having to be in two places at once!040

here is layla, lining up at the start. she’s only had her training wheels off since wednesday!027030

she had a little bit of trouble, since she’s not used to riding on the grass and around sharp turns, but still, pretty impressive for a new rider!032035039

it was definitely a lot of fun. I’m very proud of my riders!

finally!

here are layla’s curtains!  actually up on the window! i have to say i’m quite pleased with myself for actually getting this done.  but i have to give credit where credit is due… so thanks to my MIL for going to the fabric store w/ me and helping me with measurements and all that.  AND, thanks to debbie for letting me use her sewing machine and for ironing all the hems for me!  YAY!!!!

i’m sure i will offend all sorts people with this…

… but i just don’t get why the entire world is so torn up about the death of michael jackson. yes, he had an insanely successful career as a singer/entertainer/pop star. yes, he took a lot of that to a whole new level. yes, i remember thriller and doing the moonwalk. yes, i remember wanting one of those red leather jackets, and one of those sparkly white gloves. however… i’m also wondering why everyone else is seeming to forget how he bleached his skin (and then had a big hit stating that it doesn’t matter if you’re black or white… always wondered about that one), underwent so much plastic surgery that he barely looked human anymore, made crotch-grabbing an acceptable dance move, hung his kid over a balcony, showed up for court in his pajamas, and, oh yeah, was accused of child molestation HOW MANY TIMES??? this was a VERY disturbed man. i have never understood why being a celebrity excuses people from upholding the same morals and standards that we expect of normal people. i w...

for my not-so-american friends

i didn't have an actual roll w/ the green plaid on it, but i found a refill and an empty roll in my junk drawer (yeah, i know, that should tell me something).  but even the empty one says 'scotch' on it.  there you go!  SCOTCH TAPE!

what I wore wednesday

iiiiiiiiiiiiiit’s wednesday again!!! which means it’s time for me to brag about all of my incredibly well-thought out and likely expensive fashion endeavors prove to the world that I didn’t wear jammies all week. well, not all week… wednesday: tank: old navy, thrifted cardigan: handmedown jeans: thrifted flip flops: kohls earrings: target scarf: thrifted I was SO excited to find this scarf! it’s gorgeous! very silvery and shimmery, the blue flowers and so cute, AND it’s short! for somebody like me, who is of the not-so-tall persuasion, really long scarfs (or even standard length scarfs) can sometimes be a little overwhelming. you know? it’s like, “how many times can I wrap this thing around my neck before you can’t see my head anymore?” at any rate, this one is awesome and I love it and expect to see it on me a lot! I also found the process of trying to take a picture to be quite entertaining. I have a ‘people dog’, meaning, wherever her people are, that is where she th...

today rocks

give me a sunny, warm day and i’m happy, pretty much, whatever the day brings. so a sunny day that started with sitting out in the sun with friends, knitting, is just over the top fabulous! yes, i realize i am easily pleased. i’ve actually gotten a lot done since getting home as well. not that you can tell. i just love this phenomenon that goes along with having children. while i’m busy cleaning one part of the house, they’re busy trashing another. it is physically impossible for my entire house to be clean all at once. but oh well, right now i have clean bathrooms, and although the living room is cluttered with toys and other kid paraphernalia, it has been dusted and is about to be vacuumed. sigh. speaking of sigh… well, actually, si , the boys are planning a hike up mt. si on saturday. we’re looking forward to nolan coming up tomorrow evening for a visit. they will be doing this on saturday while layla and i go to a birthday party. then on sunday, we’ll be spending the afternoon at ...
