meal plan monday

  • sunday: waffles; sausage
  • monday: chicken soup; sourdough (carried over from last week – we had leftovers on saturday instead)
  • tuesday: hamburgers; carrot sticks; tater tots
  • wednesday: chicken; rice; peas&carrots
  • thursday: french dips; salad (we have christmas dinner on the 25th, not on christmas eve)
  • friday: christmas dinner!!!!
  • satuday: pizza; green beans (as if we could NOT have it!)

i did the shopping yesterday, thank goodness. i hate shopping anyway, but doing it on sunday afternoons works pretty well, because i have the potential to do it alone… although layla somehow finagled her way along. i went to qfc in redmond w/ the added bonus of being able to go to ben franklin in the same trip. managed to pick up the RIGHT yarn for attempt #5 or something of my niece’s birthday/christmas/graduation present (yes, she’s 1 – you read that right. i’m just not very optimistic about getting it done in the next decade). ::sigh::

3rd round of snow

we had been following the forecast very carefully because everyone’s favorite 4 letter word was being thrown around a lot. SNOW. originally, there were predictions of something insane like 5-8 inches by mid-week, so everyone was very excited. unfortunately, as mid-week grew closer, the prediction was more like, an inch or two in the evening, followed by warming up and raining shortly after midnight. the kids were afraid they were going to completely miss it. but they were determined! they (especially layla) decided to employ all the ‘make it snow’ tricks in the book. she wore her jammies (and socks and underwear) inside-out to bed that night; she put a spoon under her pillow AND micah’s; and of course, flushed an ice cube down the toilet. well, it worked! around 7 or so, it started snowing. fin, sprinkly snow, that quickly became REAL snow. it piled up quickly, and by the time shane went to bed, there were a couple of inches on the ground. I laid in bed w/ him for awhile, with the ...

cali trip 2011–day 5

and it was BACK to the bay area for us! we met grandpa dick at the oakland zoo, where he volunteers, and had a great time wandering around and seeing all the animals. layla and micah w/ the tortoises. they were HUGE!   checking out the siamangs.   I’m always a fan of trains. even smaller zoo trains. we didn’t have time to ride it this time though.   flamingos playing in the sprinkler.   our family and grandpa dick by the elephants.   layla, kissing the pig for gramma laurie.   micah, kissing a pig butt… because he’s micah.   hopping lily pads in the children’s zoo.   micah, showing that he’s part frog.   our family. we had a really nice family picture that we took here 2 years ago, and I wanted to update it. this one didn’t turn out as good. oh well.   layla, the spider.   layla and shane on a caterpillar. after the zoo, we made a brief stop to see nana:   where we played with toys…   and ate cheetoh’s… then laurie dr...

week 31 in pictures

sunday: no pic, but I have a paper that micah wrote his name on repeatedly that I’m going to crop to 4x6 size. monday:     it finally occurred to my kids to put the slip & slide at the bottom of the big metal slide. they had lots of fun and no one wound up w/ a concussion from running into the trampoline. always good. tuesday:     who says you can’t style a buzz cut? layla was determined to put a clip in daddy’s hair. by some miracle, it actually stuck! wednesday:     I sent them to get their jammies on. they showed up a little later with odd looks on their faces wearing this. micah had this weird, guilty look on his face the whole time, and layla was all put out with this big long story about how micah MADE her put the dress on him and he made HER be the prince and that was just ridiculous because why did she have to be the prince anyway and I don’t wanna wear this stupid vest and micah should be the prince because HE’S the boy. it w...

chocolate-banana shake

so, I don’t know how many people will be interested in this. angie, maybe. I’m trying to eliminate enough CRAP from my diet and working on putting into me only that which is healthful and nutritious. I’m kind of skirting paleo eating and just sort of dabbling in it. but the biggest thing I’m trying to get rid of right now is sugar. sugar is TERRIBLE for you. some people probably quake at the very thought of that, but really, for me, it’s not that huge of a deal. I have never had a huge sweet tooth. most of my snacky cravings are in the form of salty junk, rather than sweet. a little bit ago, I wandered into the kitchen looking for a little something. I remembered that I had some bananas in the fruit bowl, and figured I’d better eat one of them before it got too ripe for me (I’m a little squeamish about bananas and there’s a very narrow window where I can eat them without gagging. it’s not the taste, it’s the texture.) so I peeled myself a banana and was thinking how much I really did...

my #1 use for old broken crayons

hi, my name is rachel, and I’m a mom. if you’re a mom, chances are, you’ve encountered this: broken crayons.  it’s a fact of life and it’s annoying. well, sort of. there are actually dozens of uses for old broken crayons. today’s post will highlight just one of them. you may have done this one before: these are muffin crayons. you take an old muffin tin (I picked one up at a thrift store years ago and use it for this, paint, sorting other small crafty type things, etc. while good in theory, and popular among preschool teachers, I really find this lacking. here’s why. kids don’t like to color with muffin shaped crayons. first of all, younger kids, unless shown, have no idea what to do with them and will ignore them. if you tell them they’re crayons, they’ll try to hold the thing flat against the paper and rub back and forth. this is okay, for the experience, but once they’ve done that a few times, they put it back and are done with it. how do I know this? I have a set of muffin ...
