project life 2014–week 13

sunday: it was a dry, sunny day! so micah rode his bike, had himself a picnic, and then built a nest and sat on his eggs… okay, he took a blanket, formed a nest, filled it up with yellow tinkertoys (they are roundish shaped), and pretended they were eggs.004

monday: better known as “mustache monday”! it was a theme day at school and these guys were SO excited about it! 006

also monday: another gorgeous day meant an afterschool picnic in the front yard (it stays out of the shade longer than the backyard).010

also also monday: another pair of sunglasses I DON’T hate, busted. I have this one pair that I despise. they are uncomfortable, the lenses are scratched, they are ugly. THEY WILL NOT DIE. I’ve had them for years now. YEARS! for me, keeping track of a pair of sunglasses for longer than one season is a record. (which, btw, is why I’ve never paid more than $15 for a pair. and that’s a splurge!) I cannot break them and I cannot lose them. sometimes they disappear for a while, and I do a happy dance and then replace them. and then they show up again. and then I break the ones I bought to replace them… I am seriously cursed.012

wednesday: progress on layla’s experiment for the science fair.023

friday: we’ve had crazy downpours a lot this spring, but this is the first one of these I’ve seen!029

saturday: since dave’s finally done with his office move and CU-RAZY hours, he’s actually home during the kids’ waking hours and shaggy micah got a haircut. I was so desperate that I was going to take him to a shop and pay for a cut, but he was quite distraught about that and wanted daddy to do it. (haircuts are NOT his favorite.)030

and one little skinny of toby, getting to be a real cat, and explore the front yard on a nice day. he is constantly trying to escape lately.

project life 2014–week 12

sunday: dave had to spend the day at work (again), and has been really wanting to hit varlamos lately, so we met him over there for dinner. YUM. major oinkage.2014-03-23

monday: micah entertained himself with my mom’s special edition monopoly game for close to 2 hours. 057

also monday: apparently toby does not think this would be a good time to take pictures of last week’s layouts…062

thursday: micah woke up super early and took full advantage of some (rare these days) daddy time! he was very excited to have breakfast with him.010

also thursday: and shortly after that, my non-early riser, layla, was up too! no idea why they woke up so early that day, but they were all very happy to cuddle up together.012

saturday: layla and her giggly girl friends having breakfast at camp lutherwood! 023

meanwhile, back at home on saturday: this is one of many reasons I love my dad. he’s outside working in the yard and micah got sent out to help him (ie, get some fresh air and quit whining about using my phone), so my dad gives him a SAW!, and a job to cut off some low tree limbs. love it.036

a couple of skinnies:

018   031

and the rest of these will go into an insert. I was quite picture-happy this week!

003  007

this is what it looks like under layla’s pillow. always. looks like I cursed her with my book ADD. 014

jazz festival at WHS. high school jazz ensemble, band, and combo, plus jazz bands from 2 junior highs, AND performance by the teachers. AWESOME. even though shane is planning to be done with band after this year, he is already planning to attend this concert next year, just to hear the teachers play again. 017

yeah, he’s 14, but putting shane on a city bus still freaks me out a little.022

love. just love.029021  026

remember when I used to blog?

you know, like actually write posts about stuff that I thought or things we were doing… funny stuff my kids were doing, how my daughter, at the age of 2 and a half, refused to poop… I wrote about knitting, I wrote about cooking, and more than anything, I think I wrote about my horrible fight with the entity of housekeeping…

it’s funny to look back, something I find myself doing a lot of now, and see how, in the 6 years since I started this blog, life has changed. a lot of it is that my kids are older. the ‘stuff’ of daily life is different. all of my kids are in REAL school now, at least part of the day. I haven’t changed a diaper in years. nobody takes naps, unless they are sick or have been to a sleepover. breastfeeding, potty training, baby wearing, co-sleeping (except for the occasional sneaky nighttime visitor or bad dream) is all a memory now. even sippy cups. I didn’t think there would ever be an end to the sippy cups. it’s all very, very weird, and I find myself getting nostalgic over the stupidest things. I was laughing hysterically in a restaurant the other night over this baby (about a year old) who kept dropping things on the floor. first the cup, then the bread she was eating, then the cup again… seriously gravity is a b****.

but anyway, I don’t really post about much of that anymore. project life, and the related posts have hijacked all of my “must document” energy. I used to write about things that were going on as a way to share what we were doing… what life was like. I do that now weekly, with my post of the weekly pics, or via facebook or instagram. while that’s fun, and immediate, short and sweet, I really miss blogging. writing the stories about the actual stuff we are doing.

right now, my days are crazy. we drive 10 miles each way to get to school. multiple start and end times because of junior high, elementary, and half-day kindergarten. we really like our schools, but sometimes I kind of wonder what my current degree of insanity is. I am completely obsessed right now with barre3. I go almost every day. I was hoping to be auditioning to be an instructor for them, but seem to have encountered an unexplained set back that is out of my hands… so I guess I just have to be patient there, and see what happens. monday and tuesday, after picking up micah from school, I go and clean my mom and dad’s house for them. the rest of the week days, we just go to hang out with my mom so my dad can get away or outside for a little while. it’s hard on micah, but he’s finding creative ways to keep himself busy. breaking from his routine is hard for him, so hopefully he will adjust to this new routine soon. then it’s off to pick up other kids. every friday, I get to hang with layla’s class during their slot at the school library. that’s very fun. checking books out, reshelving, all of that. then after, I have about 20 minutes before micah is out of school, so I go to lunch with her and just hang out and chat with her and her friends. it really is just lovely (aside from the scent of cafeteria food). layla has ballet once a week. shane has workouts at the high school for football 4 times a week. two of those days I drive the carpool. I have to say, cramming my van to the rafters with teenage boys is one of the highlights of my week. always hilarious. somewhere in there, I try to get grocery shopping and errands done with as few ‘helpers’ as possible. all said and done, I am almost never home between the hours of 8:30 and 4:30. it’s like I work full time… like it, but without the paycheck… oh, and I host the moms club book club once a month, and still hold a board position (I’ll be all done in june). and then there are assorted band concerts and what not sprinkled in here and there.

for the last couple of months, I’ve been doing a lot of single parenting. dave’s company is moving offices this coming weekend, which has meant a TON of extra work for him. he’s been gone most weekends, and working crazy hours from before we get up until after we go to bed at night. he’s put in 40 hours in the last 3 days… I’m hoping there’s a light at the end of the tunnel somewhere soon…

6 years ago, I had a lot less STUFF going on. I had more time to obsess about what a terrible homemaker I was. that fact has not changed, I just have less time to actually do something about it. I don’t know if that’s a good thing, or a bad thing, but my house is always messy, as usual, preparing creative meals that people will actually eat is still a struggle I don’t enjoy in the least, and even my laundry has been known to get behind! I know! (gasp!) I still wish I could somehow be one of those neat, organized people, who just somehow DOES all of that stuff easily and without having to remind myself that I’m actually supposed to DO something about it, but that’s another fact that hasn’t changed about me.

I’m at the point in the year where I’m starting to look forward to summer, when we don’t have to be anywhere at any certain time. ahhhh… if that doesn’t sound like vacation, I don’t know what does. vast blank pages on the calendar… oh, I can’t wait!

but now it’s bed time, and I’m totally getting sleepy… nighty night, bloggers, I promise to post more interesting stuff later. assuming we actually do some interesting stuff.

project life 2014–week 11

sunday: stayed home from church with 2 coughing/sneezing kids. got to play a rousing game of headbanz with a cat cemented to me instead.046

monday: I took this out my parents’ kitchen window. I was doing some cleaning there and my dad went outside to do some yardwork. suddenly it started DUMPIMG hail. typical of my dad, he kept right on working, whilst hiding under the trees.002

tuesday: getting started on layla’s science fair project. this is her grand plan. two pots of lettuce seeds. one will be watered with water, the other with sprite. we’ll see if there’s a difference.012

wednesday: driving between the upper and lower totem lake malls… both sides of the street are lined with thunderclouds and they are in bloom right now! so pretty! I used to drive this route home from work every day about 7 years ago, and always try to make an excuse to go back around this time of year because it’s so awesome.015

also wednesday: hello spring!

017

which of course meant:019

thursday: we had some time between dropping the big boys off at football workout and when layla got done with her after school newspaper meeting, so micah and I went to the park. as usual, his favorite thing to do there is throw rocks into the lake… they will either need to dredge the bottom or bring in a load of new rocks if we make too many more trips there.

030

and don’t mind the little crack peaking out… this kid has no butt with which to keep his pants where they belong.033

saturday: they sprouted!038

and I have a bunch of extras, mostly skinnies that I will be using in an insert this week:030 043026 027036 003005

loving the free carwashes that came as a perk of buying our new car!008

layla’s project life!

I am very excited to announce that my daughter has caught the bug! the project life bug! she received a kit (mayfield childhood edition) and an album for her birthday from uncle joe and aunt mary, and has been begging me and begging me for months to order her some pictures to get it going. well, that’s easier said than done, since it involves backtracking and choosing photos from the past, figuring out how they will lay out in the book, etc. etc. (it is SO much easier to print and complete pages in real time! seriously. major motivation to keep up in my own current album!) layla has chosen to start with her 7 year old/second grade year. it is incredibly convenient that her birthday is in the summer, so it falls neatly between two school years. this is like a soothing massage with calamine lotion for chronology obsessed rachel.

so I finally got some pictures organized and ready to be printed, then waited for a good deal. shutterfly came through, and I got them ordered.

she was SO excited to get started when they arrived.025

I got her pictures all organized in order, and kind of explained how the system was going to work and she got busy right away.027

I put a month’s worth of pictures into the book to get her started, she chose cards and did all the journaling. 038

it has been so fun, watching her get comfortable with it and give it her own style. 005006007008

at first, I was a little alarmed by all her little doodles and stuff… but just because it would never EVER occur to me to do that. but then again, I’m not layla. I fill every square millimeter of my cards with words, because that’s just me. layla, from the time she could hold a pencil has been a drawer and a doodler. this is so her and I LOVE it.
