skating!

before our trip to california, dave’s mom had told us that there was an outdoor skating rink in elk grove for the holidays. EXCITING! many of you will be appalled by this, but neither of my younger two children have EVER been on the ice, and shane has been MAYBE 3 times. I know! it’s really sad, considering I spent my entire adolescence in an ice rink!

the biggest problem for me, is my skates. they are… um… well, let’s just say they’re a couple of decades old. back in the day, they were really nice, top of the line, custom-made harlicks. now, 3 kids (and a lot of years of wearing birkenstocks) later, they are a LOT too small for me. and of course, I’m not going to wear rental skates. every non-skater I know thinks this is crazy, but SKATERS, you understand, right?

at any rate, for this occasion a (quite literally) SHOVED my feet into my skates and took my family skating!

shane, having been before, did great, aside from a wobbly right skate, and managed to stay on his feet the whole time. layla, took to it a little too well, for it being her first time. she LOVED it. had a smile on her face the WHOLE time. didn’t care a bit about falling down and getting her pants wet, she was back up and going in seconds. she was fast. she was trying to skate backwards and do little turns. HELP! micah… well, I neglected to think about the fact that micah absolutely HATES to get wet. he freaks out if his hands are wet, and if his clothes get wet, it’s the end of the world… yeah… skating may not be a good match for him! but, aside from world-is-ending hysteria each and every time he fell down, he plugged away, and even (I think) had a good time. they had some orange buckets and traffic cones on the ice that kids could use to push around, and he liked that a lot.437439441442449455459462465466

my feet were completely numb by the time we were done, and my toes and ankles hurt for hours afterwards. I miss skating so much, and I’d love to be able to go and take my kids more often.

anyone want to contribute to my “new skates fund”?

tater tot casserole recipe

i realized i forgot to post this last week when we had it.  i actually like it a little better than the hash brown one, but both are good.  it’s VERY similar. once again, this is something i’ve made so many times that i just kind of wing it now, although i do have the recipe that kate sent to me after she made it for my family when micah was born. i like to keep the recipe because it has some little ‘britishisms’ throughout, just like kate! ;-) who, by the way, rocks, having called to check up on me the other evening when she saw that the power in our area was out AGAIN!  thanks kate, smooch smooch! but now i’m getting distracted… big surprise. here goes. you will need: 1 lb or so ground beef (or ground turkey) 1 chopped onion a bunch of veggies (kate’s recipe calls for a ‘tin’ of mixed veggies, but i use fresh carrots & celery if i’ve got’em, frozen beans, peas, corn, whatever).  maybe 2-3 cups. 1 can (or tin) of cream of something soup (i use celery usually

“you should have your head examined!”

… i just did! yup, yesterday i had the thrilling experience of sitting in a hospital waiting room for 2 hours, followed by another in a trauma room.  no, i don’t think i had suffered any sort of major trauma – i think that’s just what room they had left to stick me in.  i mused about where we would go if they had to kick us out because a ‘real’ trauma situation arose.  thankfully, we didn’t have to learn the answer to that.  i guess i was a traumatic as it got during that window of time. backing up, i wound up in the hospital yesterday because micah threw some clothes on the ground.  the night before i had been folding laundry in the living room.  i had a couple of stacks of ‘hang up’ clothes that were draped over the baby gate in front of the fireplace.                         yes, it’s a christmas picture, but i knew i had it in my stash.  at any rate, there’s the ugly baby gate that the clothes were hanging on.  also notice the wood mantle above it that the nativity set is on.

books

so i have, what i’ve coined as, “book ADD”. basically, i love books. i love to read. i love the king county library system and their fabulous website. i love clicking the “place hold” button. i generally have upwards of 35 books checked out, a hold list a mile long, and a running ‘tab’ of fines for overdue books. but here’s the problem. i generally have so many books and i want to read them all, that i never wind up reading any of them. i’ll bring home a book, read a chapter or two, and then the next book on my list will come in. repeat. eventually, i will have read 2 chapters of a dozen or so books, they will be due to go back, and i’ll never get around to finishing them. ugh! well, i’m officially attempting to ‘kick that habit’. at my husband’s repeated suggestion, i’m learning to make use of the ‘freeze’ button on the library’s website. this enables you to keep your hold on the book, but not receive it until you want it. it just moves other people’s holds ahead of yours. this is

has anybody seen my blogger mojo?

i think someone must have stolen it.  seriously! i’ve had NOTHING to say for a week now.  me! nothing to say! i didn’t even know that was possible. i have a few things on the back burners, but nothing really to post because it would require uploading pictures off my camera and for some reason, i can’t find the motivation to do it.  sure, i’ll dig all the grass and weeds out of the garden, but plugging a camera into the computer is just too much work.  geez.  well, at least my priorities are straight. for once in my life…
