“holiday with lights” at wild waves

every year, in december, our local theme/water park gets all decorated up in christmas lights and opens the rides in the evenings. I went once, when I was in high school, but the park was much less “six flags” then, and I haven’t been back since. a friend of mine won some tickets to this from a radio station and wasn’t going to use them, so she offered them to me! I was so excited! I knew that everyone would have a blast (hard to find, with our 8 year age span). we didn’t tell the kids where we were going, but told them to bundle up good!

we had a few ‘minor’ issues… micah really wanted to go on the kangaroo ride, but wasn’t tall enough. and there was this kiddie train ride and he decided he wanted to ride in the engine. 2 other kids were ahead of him in line, and they got there first. I thought he might slug them! but instead, he rode in the caboose with layla and cried the whole length of the ride. sheesh. then he didn’t want to do anything. the rest of us were definitely not ready to go home, but I didn’t want to have to deal with sad, pouty micah the whole time either. dave was brilliant and took him back to the train ride, where he successfully got to the engine, rode the train, and was happy as a clam for the rest of the evening… go figure.

we all rode the scrambler repeatedly. that has always been my favorite ride. there are also the ‘paratroopers’, which layla and shane rode together, and then at the end, layla and I ran back up the hill so I could have a chance to ride. that ride has been there forever, and it was one of my favorites when I was a kid. (I was disappointed that the hamster wheel ride was gone, though.)

the downside of going on a saturday night was that we had to share the park with teenagers who were making out in line, whiffs of pot smoke wafting from the bushes, and a drunk guy barfing when he got off of the ride we were about to get on. (I would recommend going on a week night!) but, we all had a really good time, nobody froze, and we were able to plunk kids right into bed when we got home.

to trick or treat or not to trick or treat… that is the question…

so i appear to be having a halloween dilemma. i’ve always ‘celebrated’ halloween. you know, we carve a pumpkin, dress up in costumes, go ring doorbells and get candy. i did it when i was a kid. my kids have done it. but that’s not to say i feel entirely comfortable with it. i haven’t looked into it a lot, but i am aware of the sketchy, pagan history of the holiday, and it does kind of disturb me that that’s what we continue to celebrate. and i do remember at some point, my mom expressing concern over the holiday and kind of wanting to ‘quit’. that said, what most people ‘celebrate’ as halloween is a far cry from where it came from. i don’t think that putting a kid in a bunny costume and ringing the neighbor’s doorbell is all that evil. dressing up is fun. candy is fun. but the bible warns about associating with witchcraft and mediums and various evil stuff like that. ***edited to add*** and as a christian, i believe that following the bible’s guidelines is important. does this not qu

dear neighbors which shall remain nameless,

i am writing this informational letter on behalf of your children, your bank account, and your auto insurance company, all of which suspect an impending blow to their current, healthy state. it appears that you may not be aware of certain traffic laws which pertain to the proper seating and safety of your children while in your vehicle, so i will take this opportunity to share them with you.   Washington's New Child Restraint Law Effective June 1, 2007, children less than eight years old must be restrained in child restraint systems, unless the child is four feet nine inches or taller. A child who is eight years old or older, or four feet nine inches or taller, must be properly restrained either with the motor vehicle's safety belt or an appropriately fitting child restraint system. Children under thirteen years old must be transported in rear seats where it is practical to do so. The fine for improperly restrained children in motor vehicles is at least $112 per c

party planning - from a 3 year old.

with micah's birthday coming up on friday, there has been a lot of discussion of party themes. for some reason, layla has become completely convinced that micah should have a princess party. this totally cracks me up because she's been talking since july about how when she turns 4, she's going to have a pirate birthday. so she brought this up again this morning while she, micah and i were all flopping around in the bed waiting for the house to warm up (coffee to finish brewing). i said that micah didn't really want a princess birthday, at which point he crawled over me and farted. so layla, in true layla fashion, said, "maybe he should have a fart party."

a blue period...

i'm feeling really lazy lately. well, some might think i'm lazy all the time, but it's worse right now. i always get really down on myself when i'm having trouble keeping things organized, when my house is a mess, when we eat mac and cheese for dinner, etc. usually that's appropriate motivation to get me off my butt and make me keep things in some sort of relative order. but night now it's really bad. i don't feel like doing anything. there are toys all over, and i purposely make myself not see them because i just don't want to pick them up. same with the dirt behind the door in the bathroom. the pile of clothes that need to be ironed, the mess in my bedroom, the crap falling out of the drawers in my bathroom, the garage. i don't want to go grocery shopping. i don't want to cook. the floor needs to be swept and mopped in the kitchen and dining room and the sink is dirty. the backyard is a total disaster and i just don't feel like

idiosyncratic kids, bad parenting, and the like…

here’s a random post for you.  a smorgasbord of tasty day-to-day anecdotes with no topic in particular. HOW TO MAKE “D-CHEESES”   - just in case you find yourself in charge of my daughter around snack time. i have no idea where she came up with this, or why it is called ‘d-cheese’, but if she asks for d-cheese, this is how you make it:   the stacking is key! if you should, for some reason decided to cut one half and then the other half, you’re asking for it.  the two halves must be stacked and then cut. and all 4 pieces must be stacked on top of each other before handing over.  how she came up with this, and how i figured it out, i have no idea. i never claimed to have normal kids. BREAD ANYONE? the other night we had bread with dinner, but forgot to eat it. micah found it a little later and decided to have a little snack.            he was reaching into the bread and digging it out.  do you see the hole he put in that piece? and finally, WANNA FEEL LI
