week 21 in pictures

dave was a little bit tired. he fell asleep on the couch after church. layla drew a picture for him. I thought this was really cute.

dave brought me ‘my baby’ all warm and wrapped up in his ducky towel after his bath. I tried to hold him like a baby and convince him that he was still my baby… yeah, that didn’t go over so well. “no! I’m just a boy!”

layla, doing a cheer for me. excuse underwear-clad micah.

I NEVER let this happen. I’m usually super anal about keeping the sink empty and the dishes directly going into the dishwasher. wow. that was so depressing I had to take a picture!

for whatever reason, micah was totally wound up on friday night and couldn’t go to sleep. he finally passed out around 11 in the chair.

uncle eric was in town and we had brunch with him on saturday.

more saturday:2011-05-28

they brought the kids paper and crayons while we waited. they had this wall where they displayed kids’ drawings, and micah and layla both wanted to have their pictures hung up. layla drew a very talented cook, flipping 4 pancakes at a time!

  1. dave turned over the couch, looking for something. the disaster underneath was so disturbing I had to photograph it.
  2. micah and layla went out to play in the POURING rain. he was so cute all dripping.
  3. the sunlight hitting the trees out the back door one evening.
  4. micah, moth full of chicken nugget at mcdonalds.
  5. dave, showing off his mad happy meal toy flipping skills.

that’s that!

project life–week 21

the spread:002  included this week is the letter that layla brought home from school about a BEAR that was spotted in the vicinity of the school grounds. in case you forgot, we do live in the boondocks! thank you, nature, for joining us!

first half of the week:003

second half of the week:007thursday’s slot if filled with the thank you card layla received from locks of love for her hair donation back in november.

extras:006the back of this page has the letter from the school. I also decided to do 2 5x7 collages this week instead of an 8x10. mainly because I only had a handful of extra pictures, but I had a bunch from our saturday brunch w/ uncle eric. so I did one that is just from that. I like it. works for me (and requires less extra pages in the book. I’m already a little concerned about reaching capacity before the year is half over!)

and that’s week 21!

further PL endeavors

I’m catching up! the guilt (at least in the photo/memory department) is dwindling! my work on this year’s project life album got me itching to take care of the years of backlogged photos that have been haunting me from the depths of my external hard drive and enormous black box on the shelf of my closet.

back in march, I plowed through 2010, followed quickly by 2009. what a relief! 2 years of of our family’s life, via photos and their stories, safely stashed in albums where they can be enjoyed!

but then I had a problem.

I was out of albums! the two albums I’d used for ‘09 and ‘10 were creative memories albums I had on hand, but with those used, what next?

I weighed my options. no, seriously, I scoured websites, writing down prices, adding things up, trying to figure out what would be the most cost-effective way to accomplish what I needed to accomplish. I had at least 4 more years’ worth of pictures to deal with. I’m not real heavy on the embellishments, but I did want some nice papers, journaling boxes or cards, and the like.

I really, really wanted to remain loyal to creative memories, and I liked what I saw, as far as some of their lines of papers went. but OMG, to do what I needed to do, would have cost me upwards of $100 and that was BEFORE printing my pictures!  eek! I no way could I do that 4 times over!

so I priced stuff at craft stores like ben franklin and joann’s. albums were definitely cheaper there, but I ran into the same problem I always do, shopping scrapbooking supplies at places like that. it’s overwhelming! I get dizzy wandering through all the displays of papers and stickers (which I never use, anyway), and other such stuff that I don’t even know what I would do with. I am not a ‘fancy’ scrapbooker. I look at magazines and websites devoted to ideas and layouts and I don’t like ANY of them. I am not trying to make a work of art out of one page. I am not going to put one picture on a 12x12 page, fill the rest in with fancy papers, designs, words that are not my own to start with, and other such fanciness. if that’s your kind of scrapbooking, please don’t take offense, it’s just not my thing. to me, that’s a waste of space in an expensive book! I want at least 3, maybe 4 pictures on that page, enough color/design to make it look not boring, and the words I write to document what is going on in the picture or possibly the story behind it. that’s it. there’s no room in my book, my budget (or my patience) for other stuff.

then, I checked out all the digital photobook sites, like shutterfly, picaboo, and snapfish. those are spendy too, and without having a clear idea of how many pages I would need to do, it was hard to gauge how much it was going to cost.

and so I looked at project life. all in all, that was EASILY going to be the cheapest way to do it. but I had qualms there, too. the biggest one was that the slots in the photo sleeves are oriented horizontally. I keep that in mind now, and make sure that I take most of my pictures horizontally, especially if I’m having in mind that it might be a POTD. but I never used to do that. and I really couldn’t handle it if a bunch of the pictures were displayed sideways. seriously, couldn’t. (don’t worry, I know I need help!) I was also concerned because, in my head, PL was to be done in a picture a day format, laid out by weeks. this was very rigid in my head, and I obviously didn’t have a picture for every day in years past. my picture taking was very sporadic, and there were some months that I had only 4 or 5 pictures for the whole month.

it was all very confusing.

I kind of put the whole idea on hold for awhile, without having come to any conclusions.

I thought about it a little more, here and there, and explored some ‘different’ ideas about PL that becky higgins had posted on her blog. I kind of broadened my ideas about how I could use it and make it work for my needs. in the back of my mind, I was pretty sure that was what I wanted to do. AND, since I was using the 2010 edition of the kit for my current 2011 album, I could use the 2011 editions (or at least the amber, which I was in love with from the first time I saw it) for back years. I had also done a little bit of math, and figured out that I could easily fit 2 years’ worth of pictures in one album. WOW! that would rock and be totally economical! I was sold, but not figuring it was an emergency and I’d order them when I had some spare money laying around (you know, cuz that happens all the time).

and then I got a text from mary. becky higgins had announced on facebook that the turquoise edition was selling out. there were only 10 left and they weren’t going to be making more. there were more of the amber, but not a ton. after those were gone, PL would be unavailable until the new year’s kits were put on sale. EEK!

I IM’d dave and announced that I NEEDED to spend $106 right away!!!

thankfully, I have a husband that understands ‘scrabooking emergencies’. I ordered one of each of the kits and spent the rest of the afternoon hoping that I had got my order in in time, because about an hour after the announcement went out, the turquoise was listed as unavailable.

so, to sum up: I got both albums. I love them. I figured out that if I take my vertical photos, and collage them in picassa with another vertical photo, I can cut them in half and they’ll fit in the smaller slots. phew! that saves SO much of my sanity (and we all know that it’s a precious commodity). I decided to start with the turquoise album (you know, save my fave for last – not that I don’t like the turquoise). I got all of 2007’s pictures organized and printed right away, and I’m working through the journaling. I just picked up 2008’s pictures from costco yesterday, and I’m going to get them in the book today. then journaling, and on to 2005 and 2006!

and then, at some point, I’ll finish my kids’ baby albums and figure out what to do with all the pre-digital pictures I have in 2004 and prior…

and my wedding album…

but that’s a whole other issue that I don’t want to talk about.

it might require therapy.

what I wore wednesday

okay, I’ve been considering quitting this whole thing. I hate taking/posting/looking at pictures of myself. I feel stupid. I feel self-absorbed. I feel vain or arrogant or any number of negative adjectives you might want to fill in. these pictures are from last week, and even they represent a half-hearted attempt at remembering to have someone take a pic.

this is not to say that I think any of the other participants in WIWW are vain, arrogant, or self-absorbed. no, this is my own, personal dislike or insecurity, or whatever… I like looking at their pictures, and I fully appreciate the whole point of the exercise. and, (as I sit here in my workout pants, hoodie, and socks) I am fully aware that I should, indeed, be participating with a little more gusto. I’ll do better. I swear.

anyway, here’s sunday, the 15th:

  • dress: hand me down
  • cardigan: aeropostle
  • shoes: target

003 (3)

  • necklace: target

003 (2)

I used to have earrings that matched that necklace, but I lost one.

Sad smile

wednesday, the 18th:

  • purple top: thrifted (LOVE this top. was even complimented by the girl in the mcdonald’s drive-thru who took my money! that’s sayin’ something, right?)
  • capris: gap (modified by me – you can see what they used to look like here. they are the extremely wrinkly ones on the right in the first picture.)
  • flip flops: kohl’s (highly important information, I know.)
  • necklace/earrings: target

025 (2)

  • awesome sunburn: me
  • slouch: all me…
  • terrible, blurry picture: canon powershot SD790 IS (I SO want a good camera!!!)

while using his services as photographer, micah wanted to share with you what HE was wearing:

  • emergency vehicle jammies: target (via garage sale)
  • extreme cuteness: all me! (okay, I guess I should credit dave for a little bit of it… okay, half.)

linking up, because otherwise I’m just posting pictures of myself…

week 20 in pictures

our friends, kat and cole, and their boys came for a visit on sunday. the kids played, kat and I chatted, cole and dave went for a long bike ride around the lake. they’re both training for STP in july.

typical micah – taking a break from his trains to play some mario kart.

with the weather nice, our indoor cat is just dying to get outside. he crouches by the slider, waiting for an opportunity to escape. so one day, I put his harness on him and took him out to spend some time in the back yard. I looped the end of the leash over one of the knobs on the climber and let him be.

sophie’s 15th birthday! FIFTEEN! holy cow, that is old for a dog. especially a lab. she had a vet appointment that day, for a check up and to see what was going on with this cough she’s been having. unfortunately, the news on that wasn’t great.

layla has been desperate to make a water slide. you know how it is around here. as soon as the sun comes out, people strip down to their bare nothings and decide it’s summer. it was 65* out, and the kids were sporting swimsuits and wanting to play in the frigid hose water. shane helped her rig up this little scenario. honestly, I was skeptical. I didn’t think it would work. but it did, and they had SO much fun. they didn’t freeze either.

we knew this was going to be the last nice day, so we spent all day outside. after more splashing and sliding, these two took a page out of my book and just enjoyed the warmth. I think they were still all of about 5 seconds – just long enough for me to take this picture.

old dog – lots of pills. in addition to the two pills she was taking before, we’ve now added two more. the glucosamine is to help her stiff joints, the proin is for old lady bladder control, and now we’ve added prednisone and a cough suppressant. the bad news was that xrays show a mass, likely a tumor, likely something like lymphoma, in her chest which is causing the coughing. BUT, given that she’s healthy and happy in all other ways, we decided that we’d do a non-invasive, non-traumatic treatment option. the prednisone can help to shrink the tumor for a time, make her more comfortable, and give her a little more time with us. ugh. it’s so sad to think of losing her, but I knew this day would come… I’ve just been dreading it for the last 15 years. at any rate, she seems to be reacting well, and we’ll just see how it goes.

that’s our week!

project life–week 19

full week spread:006

first half:007

extra stuff:008

a picture layla drew for me for mother’s day. she’s playing t-ball and I’m in the stands. typical.

her class picture came home from school this week. SO cute! I have a few of these from my own school days and I have always LOVED looking at them. I doubt this will find it’s permanent home in this PL album, but it’ll stay here for now. (if for no other reason than I won’t lose it here!)

and the 8x10 of the extra pictures of the week.

friday was a nice day and the younger kids and I took a picnic to the park. I took a ton of pictures, so I just decided to make a big collage of them for that day, rather than choose one or make a 4x6 collage to stick in the day’s slot. besides, I had a pic I wanted to use for that…

the latter half of the week:011

and that’s week 19!

and the extras from the week:2011-05-10

Saturday, May 14, 2011

this weekend, was the MOMS club garage sale. I was there today helping out (read: shopping). as is tradition, near the very end, stuff like clothes and toys can be snapped up for free, since they are just going to be donated anyway. as we were digging through some boxes, a friend came upon the PERFECT thing for my daughter…

a tail.

I knew it would make her happier than almost anything (other than, perhaps, a REAL dog bed, which has been on the top of her wish list forever now).

I was right.001

she’s had it on since I got home with it. even wore it out to the bike shop with dave.

Thursday, May 12, 2011

well THAT doesn’t happen every day…

thank goodness.

I was doing a little browsing on my computer.

I had to get up to go chase micah down and make him get dressed.

I returned, approximately 2 minutes later, and found this:

yes, that’s a slug.

and a pile of marginally defined goo of dirt, grass, and slug slime.

on my dining room floor.

where my chair had been only moments before.

and my feet.

I have no idea how it got there.

I assume it has something to do with the dog.

or the kids.

btw, simple green is excellent for removing slug slime from hard floors.

in case you ever find yourself in such a predicament.

project life–week 18

a little more stuff this week.

first half:005

I was still in florida on sunday, monday and tuesday, so I have the dueling pictures going on again. sunday’s pic is another collage of the pictures dave took that day. apparently, it was gorgeous here! monday is a pic he texted me of layla, waiting at the bus stop in the rain. I was on the beach when I got the text…

I have a 8x10 collage for sunday:007

and another for monday:008

and then we have a little layla artwork:009

she made these w/ some big shape stencils I have.

and another drawing:010

I thought this was hilarious. my mom gave her a sheet of smiley face stickers. she gave them bodies. LOL!

and the latter half of the week:011

still not sure what I’m doing for friday. I really want shane to write something up for me, but I don’t think I’ll be able to convince him to do it. layla drew saturday’s picture for me. that’s her trying to dunk her t-ball coach in the dunk tank. it was the mid-season classic (fundraiser), and that was part of the festivities. it was a cold, WINDY day, and we felt really sorry for all the coaches who had to brave the dunk tank.

and that’s week 18! can’t believe how far into the year we are already!

and if you want a better look at any of the pics, you can check out my this post, which features them all!

linking up at the mom creative!
