sick, sick, sick, sick, sick….

this darn cold has made a complete sweep!

shane started it almost 2 weeks ago now.  went to bed monday night totally fine, woke up tuesday morning coughing, hoarse, and feeling crummy.  that progressed to a runny nose that wouldn’t stop and, although he’s better now, he’s still got the cough.

a week ago, micah started coughing, and a day later, layla.  so the week has been filled with coughing and whining, and long naps and wiping runny noses and the constant hum of the humidifier.

although i tried really, really hard not to get it, on friday i could tell i was about to be unsuccessful and yesterday i finally gave in and admitted that i was sick.

this morning, dave woke up and said, we’re not going to church… i have phlegm.  and he’s since decided he’s not going to soccer tonight and has planted himself on the couch.

poor layla, as usual, got it the worst.  i don’t know what it is with her, but the child has always had a really bad time with colds.  she’s completely miserable, has a fever off and on and has now started complaining that her ear hurts.  yesterday, she started coughing so hard at lunch that she made herself throw up all over her plate.  lovely, i know.  she slept all of yesterday afternoon and went back to bed before 9 and didn't get up until after 10 today, so you know she wasn’t feeling well.

here she is, the grand duchess of west rhinovirus, looking her best:Picture 320

poor thing, i think she was even attempting to look happy for the camera.

here’s hoping we’re on the mend.  and for some warmer weather after this is all over because this house will be in major need of an airing out!

  1. Aww, the poor thing! Have you tried an air cleaner? We got an ionic pro, and the amount of colds around here has decreased big time. That and it makes things smell nice. Not air freshener nice, but really clean nice.

to trick or treat or not to trick or treat… that is the question…

so i appear to be having a halloween dilemma. i’ve always ‘celebrated’ halloween. you know, we carve a pumpkin, dress up in costumes, go ring doorbells and get candy. i did it when i was a kid. my kids have done it. but that’s not to say i feel entirely comfortable with it. i haven’t looked into it a lot, but i am aware of the sketchy, pagan history of the holiday, and it does kind of disturb me that that’s what we continue to celebrate. and i do remember at some point, my mom expressing concern over the holiday and kind of wanting to ‘quit’. that said, what most people ‘celebrate’ as halloween is a far cry from where it came from. i don’t think that putting a kid in a bunny costume and ringing the neighbor’s doorbell is all that evil. dressing up is fun. candy is fun. but the bible warns about associating with witchcraft and mediums and various evil stuff like that. ***edited to add*** and as a christian, i believe that following the bible’s guidelines is important. does this not qu

party planning - from a 3 year old.

with micah's birthday coming up on friday, there has been a lot of discussion of party themes. for some reason, layla has become completely convinced that micah should have a princess party. this totally cracks me up because she's been talking since july about how when she turns 4, she's going to have a pirate birthday. so she brought this up again this morning while she, micah and i were all flopping around in the bed waiting for the house to warm up (coffee to finish brewing). i said that micah didn't really want a princess birthday, at which point he crawled over me and farted. so layla, in true layla fashion, said, "maybe he should have a fart party."

idiosyncratic kids, bad parenting, and the like…

here’s a random post for you.  a smorgasbord of tasty day-to-day anecdotes with no topic in particular. HOW TO MAKE “D-CHEESES”   - just in case you find yourself in charge of my daughter around snack time. i have no idea where she came up with this, or why it is called ‘d-cheese’, but if she asks for d-cheese, this is how you make it:   the stacking is key! if you should, for some reason decided to cut one half and then the other half, you’re asking for it.  the two halves must be stacked and then cut. and all 4 pieces must be stacked on top of each other before handing over.  how she came up with this, and how i figured it out, i have no idea. i never claimed to have normal kids. BREAD ANYONE? the other night we had bread with dinner, but forgot to eat it. micah found it a little later and decided to have a little snack.            he was reaching into the bread and digging it out.  do you see the hole he put in that piece? and finally, WANNA FEEL LI

big fat nothing

see all the big welts?  yeah, me neither.  our spectacular appointment with the allergist revealed that layla is allergic to nothing.  so we're back to square one and we know nothing other than that something is causing her bladder issues and we don't know what.  maybe her doctor can put a little pressure on the urologist to see us.  who knows.  and food doesn't seem to be causing her skin issues, nor the rash she gets on her face after eating sometimes.  okay, that's not exactly accurate.  food is causing it, but not an allergy.  she has sensitive skin and when food gets smeared on her face, it irritates her skin. so, as disappointed as i am that we've gotten nowhere here, i am looking on the bright side that she isn't allergic to something major like wheat or dairy that would create a significant lifestyle change in regards to our diet.  so in that respect, it's good news.  i just really want some answers.

my mind is blank…

i’ve been really bad about blogging lately. i really don’t feel like i have anything interesting to say. we haven’t been anywhere lately. no one has been sick or hurt themselves lately. no one has visited us. i’m still working on my mom’s shawl, but it isn’t done yet. really. it’s pathetic. i think we need to take this as a hint and plan to do something exciting sometime soon. we’re kind of winding down and getting ‘mentally prepared’ for the school year. shane’s curriculum for the year is here and all loaded onto the computer, just waiting for him to start figuring it out (me too). i’ve got stuff floating around in my head about what sort of stuff i want to do with layla this year. it’s still preschool, so i have a very laid back attitude about it. fortunately, she thinks that ‘schoolwork’ and anything that seems to have an academic twist to it is SUPER cool, so there will be no struggle with her about that sort of thing, like there always has been with shane. i think the
