can someone please explain to me…

… how THIS qualifies as a dress:

_5644528 ????????

i mean, i realize that it’s probably a sure sign of getting older when you go shopping and statements like that go through your head, but really?  why would somebody wear that?  what’s with the band around the bottom?  i find the thickness of that band kind of comical, but most of them look like this:

_5685029 what the heck?

it’s grotesquely reminiscent of 5th grade when the big thing was super long sweatshirts worn with stirrup pants.  because that sort of thing is just so flattering to someone’s body shape.  apparently the pear-with-chicken-legs image is all the rage this year.  who looks good in this?  skinny people? no.  fat people? no. who???  even the models in the pictures look ridiculous!

this is what i encountered when i went shopping for a dress last night.  it’s funny to see how trends change.  i’m not claiming that everyone had the best taste when i was in high school… fortunately, none of those pictures are digital, so i can’t put them up for scrutiny.  but short dresses are definitely the in thing now, as opposed to a couple years ago when everything was very LONG.  that era was actually pretty nice.  people looked very elegant in those long, simple dresses.  now we get stuff like this:

_5764817

yeah.  i had a good time last night.

i took about 15 dresses into the dressing room – none of them looked like THAT – although a couple did have me laughing outright once i put them on.

i was amused (but impressed as well) by the fact that so many of the dresses come with the boobs already in them!  it’s great for people like me who don’t come with our own.

also, i learned that, if you’re having trouble getting it ON, by all means, STOP!!!  trust me, it’s even harder to get it off.  apparently zippers are not IN this year.

so i did successfully get a dress.  i don’t think i look ridiculous in it and i’m pretty sure i’ll be able to get in and out of it with relative ease.  i also got a FABULOUS satin trench coat that i’m super excited about!

i’ll do my best to try and get some pictures of us tonight.  oh, and i found out there’s a 3 free-drink limit this year.  up from last year’s 2.  that should be amusing!  i might not make it though dinner!

  2. Oh I am SO with you on those stupid looking dresses! My teenage cousin wore one similar to the top one this summer, and although she has the perfect little 16 year old shape the dress made her look pear shaped and just ODD...I agree, flashback to oversized sweatshirts and stirrup pants (all that is missing is leg warmers and the fantastic side pony tail!)

Have fun at the party tonight and I also can't wait to see pictures!

  3. I actually saw a girl (very pretty) at the grocery store today wearing one of those ridiculous dresses and *sheer* *stirrup* *pants*.

Why is this coming back? It's not flattering on anyone!

So where are the pictures of you and your fabulous gown?

tater tot casserole recipe

i realized i forgot to post this last week when we had it.  i actually like it a little better than the hash brown one, but both are good.  it’s VERY similar. once again, this is something i’ve made so many times that i just kind of wing it now, although i do have the recipe that kate sent to me after she made it for my family when micah was born. i like to keep the recipe because it has some little ‘britishisms’ throughout, just like kate! ;-) who, by the way, rocks, having called to check up on me the other evening when she saw that the power in our area was out AGAIN!  thanks kate, smooch smooch! but now i’m getting distracted… big surprise. here goes. you will need: 1 lb or so ground beef (or ground turkey) 1 chopped onion a bunch of veggies (kate’s recipe calls for a ‘tin’ of mixed veggies, but i use fresh carrots & celery if i’ve got’em, frozen beans, peas, corn, whatever).  maybe 2-3 cups. 1 can (or tin) of cream of something soup (i use celery usually

“you should have your head examined!”

… i just did! yup, yesterday i had the thrilling experience of sitting in a hospital waiting room for 2 hours, followed by another in a trauma room.  no, i don’t think i had suffered any sort of major trauma – i think that’s just what room they had left to stick me in.  i mused about where we would go if they had to kick us out because a ‘real’ trauma situation arose.  thankfully, we didn’t have to learn the answer to that.  i guess i was a traumatic as it got during that window of time. backing up, i wound up in the hospital yesterday because micah threw some clothes on the ground.  the night before i had been folding laundry in the living room.  i had a couple of stacks of ‘hang up’ clothes that were draped over the baby gate in front of the fireplace.                         yes, it’s a christmas picture, but i knew i had it in my stash.  at any rate, there’s the ugly baby gate that the clothes were hanging on.  also notice the wood mantle above it that the nativity set is on.

books

so i have, what i’ve coined as, “book ADD”. basically, i love books. i love to read. i love the king county library system and their fabulous website. i love clicking the “place hold” button. i generally have upwards of 35 books checked out, a hold list a mile long, and a running ‘tab’ of fines for overdue books. but here’s the problem. i generally have so many books and i want to read them all, that i never wind up reading any of them. i’ll bring home a book, read a chapter or two, and then the next book on my list will come in. repeat. eventually, i will have read 2 chapters of a dozen or so books, they will be due to go back, and i’ll never get around to finishing them. ugh! well, i’m officially attempting to ‘kick that habit’. at my husband’s repeated suggestion, i’m learning to make use of the ‘freeze’ button on the library’s website. this enables you to keep your hold on the book, but not receive it until you want it. it just moves other people’s holds ahead of yours. this is

has anybody seen my blogger mojo?

i think someone must have stolen it.  seriously! i’ve had NOTHING to say for a week now.  me! nothing to say! i didn’t even know that was possible. i have a few things on the back burners, but nothing really to post because it would require uploading pictures off my camera and for some reason, i can’t find the motivation to do it.  sure, i’ll dig all the grass and weeds out of the garden, but plugging a camera into the computer is just too much work.  geez.  well, at least my priorities are straight. for once in my life…
